More power needed for my HK450
hey guys, i need a Motor with more grunt than this one in my HK450 Mongrel...
it keeps bogging down when you give it any collective. so i need more power....
its got a Turnigy 2836-3200 motor in now, not sure about the pinion teeth count but ill just buy a new one anyway based on recommendations..
the main gear is standard Align Trex one. black..
cheers guys

What esc you using first
But my recommends would be
450mx or scorpion 2221-08
The 450mx needs less esc than the scorpion and the scorpion will run a lot hotter,

Also the 450mx would be best on the stock pinion and ratio,

Re: More power needed for my HK450
What is your throttle curve? I'm just wondering because I have a Turnigy 3600kv motor and my 450 never seems to bog. You're 3200kv should have more torque than mine. Perhaps you just need to run a higher throttle curve. If I were to try to fly my 450 with my Normal Mode throttle curve (0,35,75,75,75), it would probably bog down a bit but since I run it at 85% and 100%, it never seems to bog until I get close to my 5minute timer.

Re: More power needed for my HK450
Good thinking guys... My ESC is 40 amp skywalker...
Throttle curve is 0,40,80,80,80
IU is only 85,85,85,85,85. Never used that yet, scares me...lol
I think pinion is 14T, I don't mind buying another pinion to match new motor..
High HS scares me after the last catastrophic crashes I've had due to HS too high...lol

Re: More power needed for my HK450
Your gearing is good for the 450mx motor but that is 3400 kv I'm not great when it comes to kv and gearing but you may be able to get away with a 15 tooth, but again I'm not sure,
40 amp would be good for the 450mx motor, and your curve is pretty much what I used,
Personally if you are going to change I would get the 450mx as you have everything else ok for it, esc and pinion that is,

Those motors are hard to get, must be in big demand...lol. Googled and found a couple of sites have them on back order...

Re: More power needed for my HK450
I'm not certain, but I don't think you're going to notice a difference with just switching the motor. I think it would probably be the same result if you are still using the same throttle curve. You might just try going to your Stunt 1, at 85%. Just take it gently until you get use to it.
I tell ya what...the Stunt 2 on my 600 use to scare the hell out of me but I've gotten use to it and now I just love that sound.

Re: More power needed for my HK450
I think Tony will be happier with just a bit more on the throttle curve. He said that his Throttle Curve is 0,40,80,80,80. He has the DX6i so there is only 1 Stunt Mode. Just program that Stunt Mode for 83-85%. That way there isn't a huge change in the RPM but possibly enough change in the RPM to settle some of the motor bog.

Thanks Dan and Derek, I'll try IU tomorrow at 85%, then increase a bit at a time until it feels right... Thanks guys I appreciate your help cause I need more confidence in this motor getting me out of any sticky situations...

See if you can find out off Treff how old that motor is, might need a bit of maintenance or it just might be showing its age if he had it for a while,

Try the new align 3s motor used in the 3s version of the dominator... It's the newer version of the mx isn't it?

Re: More power needed for my HK450
A motor upgrade may be necessary. I'd just like to hear about some results from trying a higher throttle curve. Our motors don't/won't run at their "efficiency" at a lower rpm. It's quite possible that with a bit more on the throttle curve, Tony will get some results that will benefit him....at no cost. If he still feels that the motor isn't performing properly, then perhaps a motor upgrade is in order.

Re: More power needed for my HK450
I have the Scorpion HKII 2221-8. Its a solid 3S motor but does get warm. Down side is the motor is still near the $70 USD range. Now there is a newer version of this motor, not sure of the model number but Gaui uses it as a stock 3s motor for the X3. That could be a solution for the motor.
If I found the right motor its the scorpion HK 2520 3400 kV motor. Its a 4s motor but you should be able to run 3s on it. I have seen pilots run 3s on a 6s motor forblower head speed fun.

Re: More power needed for my HK450
Thanks guys. Treff reckoned the motor may be underpowered when he gave me it Kev which is why I'm thinking go for a new one.... But Derek has this motor and reckons it's ok... So I'll go with higher HS first and see what that does..
Guys I seem to have this issue on 2 threads now somehow.... Lol
Thanks for that URI, I'm not too bothered about cost pal as long as it does the job, so if the high HS doesn't do it I'll go for that or the 450mx that Kev has suggested..

Re: More power needed for my HK450
If the higher throttle curve (more RPM) doesn't solve your "bogging" issues, then a new motor may be needed. I just wanted to be sure that you at least tried the higher percentages before you went and bought a new motor that may not have been needed.
In an earlier post, you mentioned that you were going to try out the higher throttle curves today. I hope the weather is favorable for you to give it a go...then report back with your results. Best of luck buddy!!!

Re: More power needed for my HK450
thanks Derek, weather is looking OK, ill get out there later on and try it... im going for:
normal = 0,40,85,85,85
IU = 90,90,90,90,90
ill then increase IU to 95's, then 100's if need be to test it. this way if i get into probs with IU i can flick straight back to normal mode. and ill make sure i do it at a high altitude at first to give me time to recover (hopefully)...lol

Re: More power needed for my HK450
That sounds really good, Tony! Don't rush it, either. Perhaps fly one battery just to get your fingers loosened up and your eyes sharpen. Just be ready and aware of the RPM change when you flip the switch...dont panic...just breath. Be prepared to land the helicopter and lower the tail gain a bit. Because of the higher headspeed, the tail may start to wag a bit.
