helicopters they drive you mad

Post by treff »

Like the title says they drive you mad. I thought I would rebuild an old 450 after some months of inactivity and hopefully a new addition on the way (schhhhhhhhhhush) never know who's
listening lol. Anyway decided to rebuild an old 450 to get a little stick time in. ha, ha, ha, I've got to laugh. I thought this damn thing would fly straight off. It was flying quite well when
I hung it up in the garage. So far I have changed the tail, I have changed the motor, the feathering shaft, the tail boom, the tail blades, the main blades and still the darn thing vibrates
so badly I can not get it to lift off the ground. Oh almost forgot I replaced the main bearings and thrust bearing in feathering shaft. I am waiting on new main shafts but apart from that I'm out of replacements.
I was so looking forwards to getting in a few flights now that the weather is picking up but I have quite enjoyed the rebuild. I'm like a mechanical sleuth tracking down this weird vib lol. Anyway
that's my story so far, I've also flown a couple of gliders which did not end to well lol. No damage, just completely out of practice, tip stalled them in. So back to the 450 and head scratching

Did it get dropped while it was hanging in the garage? Odd that you'd have this much trouble with a model that was flying fine.

Over the months things dry out. Its possible the bearings and sliders need some oil. I only hope its that simple.

Thanks guys. Well I still do not know what's wrong with it. I am waiting for new main shafts so will see when these are changed. Yes it was flying okay when
I hung it up so my only guess is that the moths have been at it lol.

Hey Treff, get a quad mate.... Lol, I recall you having issues with a 550 or 500 last year, I have some bits and pieces in my heli box for the 450, so before you buy anything let me know, if I've got it, it yours mate..

Is the 450 FB, or FBL... I've got a tarot fbl head with some new shafts, also got 2 FB heads...

Cheers Tony, that is a very kind offer but YIPEEEEEEEEE! problem solved and now it flies quite well. Problem was main shaft and dampers. How can a main shaft bend while hanging up
in the garage. It beats me. Another thing I will tell you I sent for a new heli from e and guess what the firm I sent my hard earned to was a scam. I should have known it was to cheap
to be real. I am now in the process of getting my money back which by the looks of things at the moment is going to take for ever. Its the last heli I ever buy from China. It was sort
of welcome back to the hobby lol. And another thing when I brought the Ikon fbl unit about 14months ago the price was around £80 I look today and the price is around £160 what is
going on? Anyway rant for the week over lol. Now for some stick time on a crazy old 450. Cheers lads and thanks for all the tips.

Would you believe it two batteries in and I goes a flies the 450 into a tree. You have got to see the funny side of this. All that work. I got off pretty lightly.........................
I think, new blades, probably main shaft and feathering shaft, etc. Some how I got to going backwards at some speed and had a complete brain fade. I could see the tree and
knew if I did not do anything the helicopter was going to hit the tree. I just could not think of what to do and which stick to operate so bam! Hit the tree. Welcome back to rc helicopters.

Thanks KevG for the heads up on the 500l. Yes very tempted but after reading some of the threads on this site regarding the blade 180 I am beginning to get very
interested in this little helicopter. I have heard nothing but good things and that size is so handy to fly anywhere, Cheers

My little 450 flies again, well, it
Sort of wobbles around the sky lol
I found the problem of it going
Backwards, I forgot to mention it did this
On its own. It was a loose motor
Causing bad vibes. The motor bolts
Were tight but the motor was still
Loose on the plate. Anyway fixed that
And its smoother but still not right
I think something amiss in the head
Or was that something amiss in my head, doh,
Think I am loosing the plot guys
