Align 550PRO DFC CG

Post by cml001 »

I'm think'n that I should work on my 550.. Inherently electric are heavier than nitro models.. As well as the Align 550 being tail heavy. Now mine is a little out of CG.. Slightly heavy in the tail.. Slightly. No big deal as she really doesn't drift or have any major tendanceys to have a negative impact on flight performance. However.. After flying my N5C... I'm second guessing all that and am thinking of moving the ESC back underneath the battery tray.. I originally had it there but moved it under the main great to protect it against a crash as it stuck out a little past the tray.. It's a Edge 120HV.. Little larger than Talon90 that came with the kit.. Don't know if I want to bother with it tho.. I did build her with maintance in mine, but changing the location means re-routing wires.. Don't know if I want to go down this road or not. She flys GREAT as is... The N5C flys much better tho.. Which is why this thought comes to mind.. Maybe it's just the difference between the 2.. I don't kno.. Hummmm here is a shot of the original placement.

Nice heli mate, you know the old saying, if it not broke........ Why change something that's working ok, and don't spend too much time on her as your nitro may get jealous. Lol

What about the other heli feels so much better in flight performance? Is this something you think the balance of this one is actually impacting?

It is a little heavy on the tail... I don't know if it's gain related or the weight, but on a hard stop the tail dips slightly.. Not enough to impact performance or control.. I can just see it dip a little.. The N5C doesn't.. So like I said.. I don't kno if it's better servos in the N5C or just being a different brand heli, nitro vs electric... Me think'n too much.. I just don't know.. Prolly doesn't matter.. Think I'll leave it till time to do maintance requiring me to pull a side frame off.

Could try turning up the cyclic gain a bit. Or if there is elevator compensation for collective pitch give that a try. Tail dip or bobble on stops is common, even on a well CGd model the weight hanging out on a the end of the tail causes the model to fulcrum a bit around CG. It may balance fine statically, but in motion the moment created by the weight of the tail being out away from CG so far compared to the weight forward of CG can result in some torquing. Just a guess. Statics and Dynamics was one of my weaker course showings in college. :)
