Mini Quad Racer Build For Dummies.. Well.. This Dummie!

Ok guys.. As I said in Lee's thread... I've been watching u guys post up left & right on these mini racers... Been watching the videos here & elsewhere.. Time to start a build on one myself... But I'm clueless so im gonna need some help & patience. I've learned a lot about electronics since I've gotten into this hobby.. But this is a different animal in many respects.. Especially given the FPV aspects. So let me state what I'm looking to do. A 250 quad mini racer.. I want LEDs.. Not sure if I want a cam to record with in addition to the FPV cam or not, but I want the option to add it without having to backup & punt on my equipment or wiring should I add it. Do guys run diversity on these minis or just choose one? Definitly want OSD! Telemerty... Can that be on one and send info to my DX9?... I have so many ?s.. This is gonna happen.. So let's do this... Let's start with the body... Price not being a factor.. What's the best frame given what's been stated this far in this thread... I don't want to be replacing stuff all the time.. But it's gonna be smacked around a bunch I'm sure.. So when I do have to work on it.. I Like to keep parts availability and ease of maintaince in mind.. U get the idea... The QAV 250? I like the extended arms with tilt motor mounts.. That a good idea? Toss some suggestions at me and I'll make a decision on the body/frame and order it.. After that.. Muscle.

Blackout? This is an interesting frame too... The power board looks more intuitive than the QAV.

Frame wise, there are so many to choose from.
QAV 250 and Blackout 250 are probably regarded as top tier, so is the price. :)
Having said that, I will at some stage probably build a Blackout 4s beast.
I currently have the ZMR 250 carbon fibre which can had for as little as $30 but the finish can be a bit hit and miss.
I have heard stories of arms breaking on these but with the many crashes I have had, mine is still fine.
So to summarise, QAV250 or Blackout if quality is a priority, these are said to be extremely durable.
ZMR250 or one of the many other cheap carbon fibre frames if you are on a budget.
They all fly just fine, unless you are getting in to extreme flying like Charpu or BorisB (Look these guys up on Youtube.), I don't think there will be much difference.
As for the recording cam, the most common is the Mobius, and you do need it. :)

If money was not an issue, I'd go straight to GetFPV and buy a QAV250. They have everything you need there to get you set up.
The Blackout is another option.
Also these guys have been around since the beginning. http://www.hoverthings.com/

Or you can go the cheap option, like the rest of us on here, and get the H250 that we all have.

$ is an option.. But I'm just not familiar with what's what... Not in the quad area.. So this helps me figure out which way to go.

+1 on what the guys have said:) QAV or Blackout if money is not an issue. Having said that i got all my gear for £85 from ebay.

The next consideration is what Flight Controller? I have the Naze 32 Full, which if i can work anyone can:) very simple to understand and work around. I know there are other options that Lee uses, which he swears by that are just as good:)

There is also a great video on Youtube of soldering everything together i will look and see if i can find it and post a link:)

The h250 might be a good place to start... What, id need an RX & a battery... Prolly trade the flip for the open pilot maybe.. I could try that out and see if I like it while gathering the FPV gear.. Done.. I'm ordering one.

Do I need to order a ccw prop mount?... I'm trying to use Lee's link to myrcmart... Is there anything else I need to make this fly? It asks for an alternate motor choice is the one that comes with it is outta stock, I choose the H2206 2250kv. I also took the FC off.. Don't want the kk2.. Think I'll try open pilot.. But which one? I may want to expand it later to have GPS, OSD, telemetry, LED stuff(do I hook that up to the controller?)... Rather get one that I can add to later if I choose to. Does the open pilot support SPEKTRUM sats or do I have to run a full RX? LEE!!! LEE... Where r u? Lol

Here is what I've come up with... For now I just want a quad to practice with while I save for FPV gear... But I don't think this is the version of open pilot I'll want later.. But for now this is what I think I'm suppose to order... What else will I need.. I'll wait to submit this order till u guys confirm that this is all I'll need.. Thanks guys!

Ok I made some adjustments to your order Clay.
You don't need to choose different motors, just the standard ones.
I removed the PDB because the kit comes with one.
Removed that prop balancer. I have one, and its crap :)
Added the CCW prop adaptors.
All you need to fly from here, is a 6ch RX and the batteries.
I'm guessing the extra Standoffs are for legs. I prefer plastic ones, as they will bend and break instead of the frame.
Or use nylon screws to fix the metal standoffs. Either way will save the frame.

Welcome to the club :D

Awesome! I have a ar400 off a Parkzone spitfire.. Lol... I flew it into the highest lights of the local high school football stadium... It was a fantastic crash.. Looked like footage of WWII planes going down with only one wing.. Lol.. Anyhow.. Will that RX work?

Actually now I think of it you will need a 6ch to get control of the flight modes.
Sorry dude. Looks like you'll need to buy one :)
