i still havent done it Graham, mine is one of the stock avatars in the forum library, its a pain to get your own photos shrunk....

I used paint since it's simple and free. Just open the photo, select resize then change to pixel. Whichever is the larger on your picture height or width make that one 100 pixels. The other dimension will go to the right size. Then make sure to save the picture with a different name so you don't lose the original.

I got my Avatar to work on the site. I used Photoshop Extended CS 5, I have a students license for the suite.
- I opened the image and cropped it to just show the airframe. This allows the image to have less resizing.
- Once image is cropped its a matter of resizing one axis and allow the software to use aspect ratio so it reduces evenly
- Save As JPG and reduce quality to around 5 so the final file size is with in the limitations of the forum. Make sure you resize image and not canvas.
