There is a similar product called Tile:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L3VEC08 I only mention it because it is the same kind of deal, same price range, and I've heard/read better things about their tracking app and the loudness of the ring/chirp function is better than TrackR apparently.
These are bluetooth based trackers. You have to be within 30-100ft (depends on clutter and stuff in the way) in order for your phone to get the signal. They do not provide direction finding, only proximity sensing. They are not GPS trackers. Anything you see where the app shows the item on a map are based on two things:
1) Location of the phone when it lost the signal from the item.
2) TrackR has a network feature where if others are running the app on their phone and they get close to your lost item, the phone will send it's location out on the network and your phone will show you that ping.
Once you are in range of the item you can turn on the chirp/ring feature which will have the tag emit a noise so you can locate it easier. However, you can buy cheap ($5 or less) beepers that will be far louder.
Not meaning to poo poo your decision or interest, just pointing out some info. This isn't the first time people in our hobby have thought about using these things. Often they end up disappointed because they didn't understand the actual way they work or the real feature set.
