advice needed

Post by treff »

HI:-) guys
Well it seems like the helicopters bug as bitten
again and that old itch as returned.
But what to get to satisfy the urge.
I was thinking 500 or 550 but what, that is the question. It must have belt driven tail. Not keen on torque drives. So whats out there. I would like to hear your thoughts.
Cheers to all.

Hey Treff good to here the bugs bitten again, its hard to shake lol.

Heres a couple links to mikado logo 500 combos on ebay, they both have 500 mm blades.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MIK02259-Mika ... 3cecb9815e

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mikado-Logo-5 ... 1e9cbe4ede

Id say they are good deals if you compare to an align 550 dominator combo, which is torque tube and I would swap out the talon 90 and Gpro fbl unit.

Fastlad have a logo 480 super combo, I like the look of the 480, it has carbon frames if that makes a difference to your decision.

http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/product ... s_id=27154

I had a logo 600 and really enjoyed it. Nice and light, easy to work on, long flight times with lower headspeeds and even at lower headspeeds it doesn't lack punch.
For belt drive helicopters the logo combos aren't crazy priced but good quality. I also had a protos 500, flew well but it wasn't the best to work on.

Downside to logos are parts prices and availability tho.

If moneys no object get a goblin tho, lol.

I loved my protos 500, the kit can also be stretched (470mm blades) I run mine in both but preferred stretched. And crash costs aren't too bad either.

But with the helis on the market at the moment i would probably go with the goblin 500
FPV addict.

I think the logos are great kits,

but if money is going to be a concern then I would go for the Trex 500 crash costs are not that much more than the 450 but it's twice the size, once you step up to the 550 your paying loads for the batteries and the parts crash cost,

Yes the 500 Rex has a TT tail but the black gears seem pretty robust, and the power/torque is not so bad on them, You could look for an older 500 that would have the belt drive,
Minor league Aviator, against gravity which normally wins!

Look into compas. They had the atom line which I think has a 500 or 550 class. What I don't know is the drive system. I believe the Gaui X4ii is torque tube and its more of an align 500 size than a 550. Thunder tiger has a 550 but again I think its a torque tube. Synergy has a true 550 with both belt and torque tube. Research these and see what fits your budget. Synergy is compairable in cost to a gobby.

If you are planning to crash now an then I'd go with the Align 500 series.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALIGN-T-REX-500 ... m5671fbeef

The above link is for a Align 500 with the belt tail. In addition to the kit you'd need a FBL-gyro and the 500DFC conversion head.

That's the exact same 500 helicopter that I have. Parts are relatively inexpensive and the helicopter flies great! I've had mine for a bit more than 3 years now. I just changed out all the servos and replaced the tail belt. I flew it yesterday. Awesome fun!!!

For crash costs combined with decent quality, Align is hard to beat. Theyre a bit more expensive than some other options for up front costs, but parts availability and cost is great.

Goblin 500 is a great heli. Love mine. And speaking from experience they can take a crash very well. I think I've only had to replace one shaft in the thing so far after a few hard crashes (one straight down inverted). I'm still on the original tail boom and canopy too. Both have some chips and dings, but they're both quite functional and nothing some thin CA to stop the paint chips can't handle.

Given your track record, I'd be looking into the used market a TRex 500 belt drive or maybe a used Goblin 500 (non-competition model). No reason to shell out for brand new unless you're a stickler for build and cosmetic details.

Find a Synergy E5 on one of the forums used.. Older versions have the belted tail.. Actually in reading the forums I see there are a bunch of guys who convert the TT models to belt. Anyhow.. Synergy machines are great.. Love'n my N5C!

Cheers all again. Yes I will be looking at the second hand market to see what's available and it will probably be Align because the spares are cheap and plentiful.
Just sent off for a few bits for the 450. new motor. tail boom and tail so something to get to grips with while I shop around. Getting quite good on the sim, I have been using
CGM flight sim 2 which is quite good but not the real thing. I've also got 2 quarter scale gliders to get in the air. One I'm still building and one I have flown but tip stalled it in on
a local ridge. Out of practice I'm afraid. No damage, just a cable pulled from the tail servo so it's ready to go again. Also changed a 6 foot kipper style sloper over from 35megs so really
getting back into rc. Just need a little good weather. I do like the look of the compass 550 ultimate.....................................................no, no must be strong, look away lol
