That's pretty cool. Just got done listening to the RCHN episode in which they talked with the guy putting the whole thing on. Did I hear right, they're only letting 20 people into the competition? I'm listening again now. If so, that seems a bit odd. Maybe it is reasonable given the number of people they're expecting, but given they're doing this in conjunction with the RCHN fun fly... here it is... listening... yes. 20. Thats' total, I take it, across all classes. That seems odd to me. They're even anticipating that the slots will go very quickly.

For a competition that has a "sportsman" class for first time competitors and people without a whole lot of tricks in their bag, this strikes me as odd. 4 minute max flight routines. 4 * 20 = 1h20m of flights, figure an extra half hour in there for judging time, people being slow to the flight line, walks of shame, etc. You're still only talking 2 hours total to run the competition. Why not open it up to a lot of people, especially in the lower classes, like 100 or more for sportsman alone? They're not expecting a whole lot of advanced and expert registrants so keep that total to 20 and run it early Saturday or Sunday? The 100 slots in the lower class will help drive people to come attend their fun fly, it will also help people "sack up" if they have some skill and get into the higher two classes for more prize money.

I'm probably not getting something. Maybe they're thinking the competition detract from the fun fly if they make it too many slots and takes up too much time?

I think that's it. They wanted zero distraction from the fun fly. I would say 40 or 50 for the first year.
